Portfolios
The collection of student work, over the course of the each reporting period to the end of the year, allows you to look back to see the students progress. It paints a clear image of the student. I like make two types: testing and selected work samples which I pass along with the student to the next year teacher and a collection of work and projects which I pass on to the student to share with their family.

Student-Teacher Conferences
This is something I do regularly. It is an on going exchange of information between students and myself about their progress towards learning outcomes.
I use this for reading, writing and during/after group work. I clearly established criteria using student-friendly language this way the feedback is most effective.

Questioning
This is used before and after any activity. I find deep inquiry-based questions get the student really thinking. I use this often in Science, Social Studies and when they read.

Projects and Reports
Physical projects with or without a written report or summary is an excellent way for students to show you what they have learned. Here is an example of a grade 3 student's Social Studies project on Ryan's Well Project.
The project below was also made by a grade three student for a independent novel study of Sadako.

Tests and Quizzes
The most common use of assessment used. I use both pre-testing and post-testing as a form of assessing what a child knows and what they still need to learn.

Provincial Achievement Tests (PAT)
I have been administrating Provincial Achievement Tests for over a decade. They are used as an indicator of strengths and weaknesses of both teaching and learning.

Pre-Assessment
We find out what the student already knows or can do before I begin the lesson. This may be through one-on-one discussion, question/answer, the use of a check list or a demonstration.
