Collaborative and Co-operative Learning
The ideas of talking in the classroom have changed radically over the years.
We no longer consider that a 'good' classroom is necessarily a quiet one; we understand that learning is frequently most effective when learners have the opportunity to think and talk together, to discuss ideas, question, analyse and solve problems, without the constant mediation of the teacher.
Most of our thinking has been heavily influenced by the concept of learning as a social process. Learning and teaching approaches, include: co-operative learning and critical thinking skills.

Collaborative Teaching (combined grades/subject areas)
Our outline for the Grade 1-3 collaborative activity, designed for the Archbishop's visit.
It incorporates Religion, Language Arts, Art and Social Studies but mostly cooperation and fun.
Peer Education
Benefits of peer education, an approach where young people are actively involved in each other's learning. Science Building and testing as well as Math are excellent opportunities to work and learn together.

AAAAAActive Learning
Active learning is learning which engages and challenges children's thinking using real-life and imaginary situations.
All areas of the curriculum can be enriched and developed through active learning.
They must read, write, discuss, or be engaged in solving problems, by doing things and thinking about the things they are doing. This is found in most subject areas but Social Studies, Science and Math are the most common areas for tis form of lerning.

Outdoor Learning
The journey through education for any child must include opportunities for a series of planned, quality outdoor learning experiences. Field trips to Cummings Lake for Animal Life Cycles Unit, as well as, erosion testing and rock hunting for the Rocks ans Minerals Unit, in our school grounds are all a part of the outdoor learning experience.

Technology In The Classroom
Children today are immersed in new information, communications and technologies. The implications this has for learning and teaching is endless. We have worked with everything from Stop Animation to video recording. Dragon Dictation is used when a student struggles with fine motor skills.

Creativity
Creativity is important, and should be nurtured in our schools. In my classroom I use creativity to prompt, encourage and support learning. I allow my students to "let their imaginations run wild". They have found learning in what may seem to be play. They may use technology, manipulatives it is seeing the world through fresh eyes in a way they have discovered on their own.

Peer Mentors (Buddy Reading)
We are fortunate enough to have a small school with a strong connection between all divisions. My class has had peer support through Buddy Reading with the grade 8 and 9 classes. They are excellent listeners and mentors to my class.
Peer Mentoring (Tutoring)
Our school also has a Peer Mentoring Program. This is a tutoring program which I have three students involved in after school. I organize the materials and an older student tutors under the watchful eye of the teacher. This is an excellent way for younger students to learn through mentoring and example from a peer.

Flexible Grouping
This is the grouping of children in a purposeful way. I use this when children are being grouped due to ability or other needs. The group is able to use the knowledge and skills of each other to create a working environment conducive to learning. This is used often in group work for Science, Math andSocial Studies.
